Why Aren’t the Holidays Fun Anymore?

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Even and Other holidays are supposed to be fun. However, for many people this is often the darkest time of the year, and they do not understand why.

One of the reasons why people cannot seem to have fun during the holidays no matter what they do-even if they are doing their favorite Christmas activities-they do not feel happy at all. Instead they feel sad, gloomy, hopeless, worthless, and so on.

The most confusing part about the fact that some people feel sad during holiday times is that this is the time when they are expected to have the most fun. They may be even enjoying Thanksgiving dinner, singing Christmas carols, making cookies, watching Christmas movies, or any number of other activities that they thought they would enjoy. Nevertheless, the childhood simplicity of these special days have left them.

One of the reasons why many people do not enjoy the holidays is because they may suffer from depression. This depression could be a chemical balance that is treatable with medication, or it could be the type that is treatable with counseling or other forms of therapy. Also, some people may experience depression because they are stress out about money, lost a loved one, or are physically ill.

Sometimes holiday depression is a result of the environment, and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason for the depression, it just hits. One other explanation for why people get depressed, especially during winter holidays, is because this is the time of the year when the sun often is not out for very long.

There are quite a few self-help remedies for people who are struggling with holiday depression. One would be to make sure that an individual who is battling this is to make sure that they get a good night sleep every night, and resist the urge to try to do everything during this time. A person can only do so much before they collapse, and fun times are no longer fun if all it is obligation (i.e. visiting friends and making cookies even if they are worn out and ready to collapse).

In other words, a person cannot sacrifice a good night sleep just to make sure they do not hurt anyone’s feelings if that person cannot visit everyone that asks them to. A person who struggles with depression is one who sometimes does because they also struggle with setting boundaries, and a person with poor boundary lines often gets stressed out and they hold their anger and frustration in. As a result, they become depressed. Therefore, one remedy during the holidays that can help a person who is depressed is to just set healthy boundaries and get enough sleep.

Another remedy that a person who struggles with holiday depression can administer at home is to make sure that they eat healthy meals. A balances supply of nutrients from a variety of foods can do wonders during the holidays.

Also, a person who gets depressed during this time should make sure to watch alcohol and caffeine intake. Alcohol is a depressant, and excess caffeine can possibly cause a quick high and then an extreme low once the caffeine high wears off.

Of course, if the depression is more severe than just a low mood during the holiday that person may need to seek professional help. Usually there are many resources within most communities that reach out to depressed people no matter what time of year it is.
