Real Issues: “Nothing Seems Fun Anymore! What is Wrong With Me!”

Some people have gone months enjoying socializing with their friends, spending time with their mates, and experiencing success on the job. Furthermore, these people have enjoyed the hobbies that they normally partake in, and then all of the sudden it is not fun anymore.

Some people wonder why this is, and they may think that something is wrong with them. However, it is not that something is “wrong” with them as a person-even that they are not good enough, but this is not the case. Rather, individuals who are experiencing lack of joy be experiencing a problem of which they cannot identify.

This sudden change of not being able to enjoy successes at work, the company of loved ones, or favorite hobbies could be the result of variety of things. Sometimes it is a matter of stress and that person needs to just get a good night sleep if they have been neglecting the need for sleep. Other people may experience lack of joy because they simply have too much going on in their lives, such as a parent may have died or they may be going through a divorce.

Usually when a person experiences a time where everything they used to enjoy is not fun anymore is because they are suffering from depression. This depression could be temporary due to circumstances, or they could have developed a mental disorder such as severe depression or bipolar, which sometimes is not directly related to what is going on in the present.

Depression could be the result of terrible things going on in a person’s life or the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, most of the time when a person begins to experience lack of joy it is usually a result of a combination of the two-circumstantial factors (i.e. parent died, car accident) and chemical imbalance (not enough serotonin produced in the brain).

Regardless of the reason that a person no longer experiences the joy they used to feel, the affect of depression is usually the same, and requires a variety of treatments. For example, those who are depressed may need to consider taking action to improve how they care for their bodies. This means that they may need to eat a more balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats.

Furthermore, those who are depressed usually can find relief when they exercise, which helps get rid of excess stress, which sometimes leads to depression. Furthermore, if a person has experienced trauma or abuse in their lives they will also need to possibly seek professional counseling. Along with that, they may need to receive a professional evaluation to see what type of depression it is that they have and during this time they may be prescribed a depression medication.

The symptom of depression may also be a sign of another disorder as well. For instance, many people who are severely depressed may also experience manic highs, which are periods of extreme elation, which often prevents a person from thinking clearly. During this time a person may spend too much money, drink too much, consume illegal drugs, or engage in overly promiscuous sexual behavior.

Depression may also be one of the symptoms of a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia, which usually also includes symptoms of one or more of the following: hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, anxiety, and panic.

Depression often is attributed as a sign of loneliness as well, especially in those who are afraid of people. Therefore, a person who is struggling with depression may also need to receive treatment that will help them learn to like people more and to socialize more, because people need people.
