Symptoms of Depression - Are you depressed?

Depression is the feeling that nothing is worth while that makes you ill and unhappy.

Questions such as "Who cares?" "What's the point?" and "Why bother?" circulate in the mind of the depressed person.

Another common symptom of depression, as voiced by Hamlet: "How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!"

Other Symptoms of Depression

  • Persistent sad or "empty" mood.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities, including sex.
  • You feel a burden to others.
  • Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down".
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia, early-morning waking, or oversleeping).
  • Eating disturbances (loss of appetite and weight, or weight gain).
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions.
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness.
  • Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts.
  • Chronic aches and pains that don't respond to treatment.
  • Irritability.
  • Excessive crying.

  • hepatitis
  • glandular fever and other chronic infections
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis
  • dementia
  • endocrine disease (thyroid disorders,Addison’s disease)
  • hypercalcemia
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • cancer
  • acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • cardio- and cerebrovascular disease

Drugs that can cause symptoms of depression

  • b-blockers
  • anticonvulsants
  • calcium channel blockers
  • corticosteroids
  • oral contraceptives
  • antipsychotic drugs
  • drugs used for Parkinson’s disease (e.g. levodopa)
  • alcohol
