Introduction
As part of life it is known that depression is not picky about whom it strikes.  Millions of Americans are diagnosed with depression each year, and the number continues to grow as there is no known one hundred percent cure.  The sad fact remains that it is the number destroyer of marriages and the family unit known in the world.

People with diabetes present even higher risk factors for developing depression.  Diabetes afflicts over sixteen million Americans and the number continues to grow.  When treating depression, doctors have found that both of the diseases, diabetes and depression are improved and the quality of life for the patients grows.  This can only help when you consider that the quality of life for a diabetes sufferer can be rather poor when you consider the testing and all of the lifestyle restrictions that are associated with the disease.

Studies have shown that people who suffer from depression often times have poor physical health and their mental function is greatly decreased.  Because of this, people who suffer from diabetes and depression are more likely to suffer serious physical manifestations because the depression does not allow them to follow the diet and lifestyle restrictions that come with diabetes.  Depression sufferers often have little or no appetite and when that is mixed with the requirement of a healthy diet for diabetes problems begin to occur.

Treatments for depression are limited when diabetes is thrown in the mix.  Diabetics are limited by the types of medications that they can take.  Many of the known treatment drugs for depression are off limits to the diabetes sufferer, causing doctors to look for alternative treatment methods.

Depression Treatment with Diabetes
More often than not, doctors will chose to have the patient who suffers from diabetes and depression to have treatment for the later through non-medical avenues.

  • The use of therapy and counseling is recommended, especially by a therapist that is closely involved with the doctor.

Using this method does not restrict the treatment options.

  • Diabetes can be treated as normal then the depression is treated to ensure that the diabetes restrictions are followed.  For doctors this is a win/win situation.  The patient is not being treated with drugs that can cause a whole host of potentially harmful side effects, yet they are still maintaining control over their diabetes by way of therapy.

Depression Facts

  • For those who do not understand, it is easy to get caught in the misunderstanding that it is simply the choice of the patient to be depressed.  While this is sometimes true in rare cases, the exact opposite is the norm.

  • Depression is a medical condition that is caused by unknown changes in the brain.  These changes affect how the patient reacts to certain situations.  In the most extreme cases, the patients lose the ability to deal with everyday life, and become prisoners in their own homes, fearing the outside world and all that comes with it.
  • Doctors have been long studying why these changes occur.  Scans of the brain from depression patients show activity that is outside the norm, but they are still at a loss as to why this happens.  More often than not, depression is brought on by stress or some type of trauma.  When this occurs, changes in the brain take place that make it impossible for the patient to deal with normal circumstances.

The many drugs on the market work to block these changes in the brain and regulate the patient to a more normal function.  While the early tests showed promise, the problem of the many side effects that can occur with these drugs.  Among the most common, are severe pain in the legs, arms and body and sexual dysfunction that is amplified past the normal parameters of depression.  These effects have sent depression sufferers in search of alternative cures.

Diabetes Facts

As a disease, diabetes is understood but not curable.  The main reason behind this being the research has yet to discover why the bodies of diabetes patients suddenly stop digesting food in the correct manner.

  • Most of the food that we eat is broken down into a base substance like sugar, called glucose.  This base substance is then used to power the body in the form of energy.  In the diabetic body, the food is broken down properly but it does not get to where it should and it is not mixed with insulin.  When the glucose is not mixed, it stays in the bloodstream and causes severe physical problems.

  • The type one diabetes is common among children.  In this case the patient must inject themselves with insulin to ensure that the glucose is properly broken down.  If not, the glucose will begin to attack the immune system, making it possible for disease and illness to ravage the body.
  • Without the immune system fighting the illness, the body cannot properly fight and thus it causes severe problems.

Diabetes Risk Factors
The most common risk factors for diabetes are:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Obesity
  • Improper diet
  • Drug abuse

What You Should Do?
If you or someone you know has diabetes and depression then you need to seek medical treatment.  The combination of these two disorders can be deadly.  There is hope.  With proper medical treatment, you can live a normal and happy life.

  • If the diseases are left to their own devices there will be problems, and sometimes the adverse effects can be deadly.
  • There are several known physical manifestations with diabetes.  Including the loss of limbs, particularly the feet due to the poor circulation that is associated with diabetes.
  • The depression is the major reason why you feel as though dealing with the diabetes is too much for you.  Seek help as soon as possible so you can be on the road to recovery without any further suffering.  You are not alone and there is help available.
  • Contact your doctor or other health care worker to talk about the treatment options that are available to you.  Time if of the essence when dealing with diabetes as well as depression, make the call, you will be glad you did.
