Adjustment Disorder

Description

An adjustment disorder is not just one disorder that can appear in a patient. It seems that there are six different adjustment disorders that can appear in a patient. Just some of these are an adjustment order with depressed mood, also an adjustment disorder with anxiety and an adjustment disorder with disturbance of contact. Someone with an adjustment disorder will usually have feelings of depression or anxiety, but these can combine to create another adjustment disorder for the patient to deal with. These adjustment disorders can cause a person to change dramatically because they can start to miss school and they might even start unexpectedly fighting a lot of the time. Some people have even committed criminal offences that meant they ended up in court. But there are other people that will do the opposite of this and they will tend to lock themselves away from society altogether just so they can keep away from people. Their physical being will change as well as their motions will start to just come out of them. Patients may start crying unexpectedly and they will feel totally hopeless. The symptoms that will arise in each patient will be different due to which ever adjustment disorder that they are diagnosed with.

Symptoms

As described the symptoms in each patient will change depending on which adjustment disorder they have. If a patient has an adjustment disorder with disturbance of conduct then they will be more likely to start fighting and also they might end up causing criminal offences and this can result in them going to court and facing fines for what they have done. However if a patient has an adjustment disorder with anxiety then these are the patients that are more likely to lock themselves away from other people. These patients are also more likely to experience the more emotional side of an adjustment disorder, which can involve unexpected crying and also a feeling of depression, as well as feeling slightly nervous about the smallest thing. But these symptoms will change between patients due to the different moods that the patient will experience during the time of the adjustment change. These different feelings though do make it easier for a doctor to correctly diagnose which adjustment disorder each patient will have thanks to the feelings that are present within each person.

Causes

There are causes that can be associated with someone experiencing an adjustment disorder and most of these causes are due to life events that can happen in everyone’s life. It seems that anything that causes stress can push someone to the edge and if they fall then they can then experience an adjustment disorder and this can then cause severe depression or even a total change in their character.

Vulnerable Groups

It seems that there is an even number of males and females that do suffer from an adjustment disorder so there is no gender group that is more prone to these adjustment disorders. But there are age groups that do seem to have more chance of getting one of these adjustment disorders and these age groups are people in mid-life and also late-life. Although there are cases in people from all ages so there is always at least a small risk of anyone being diagnosed with an adjustment disorder.

Treatment

There is treatment available to patients that are victims of an adjustment disorder and it seems that the main treatment that patients can take is in the form of group therapy. Although there will also be the option of one-on-one therapy incase you feel slightly uncomfortable in group therapy. There is also the option of using prescription medicines on patients who suffer from the anxiety adjustment disorders as this has been know to help them deal with the depression that they would have been feeling due to their adjustment disorder.

Summary

There are many different adjustment disorders and they can be a mixture of two which can be very depressing for a person or they can just be a single adjustment disorder. But which ever one they are they can still cause an effect that the person would never have thought before. Having an adjustment disorder can result in that person excluding themselves from society or they can start to become more involved with criminal activities. These adjust disorders can be treated and it is highly recommended that you do seek treatment if you do suffer from an adjustment disorder.
