Body Dysmorphic DisorderDescription Body dysmorphic disorder is a disorder that can be associated with a lot of people who have a small complaint about their looks. However the people who truly suffer from this disorder are known to be very ashamed with their looks and one hair out of place can make them feel too embarrassed to even go outside of the door. However most of the time the bad image is just in their minds and is not as bad as a patient thinks it is. Patients become so embarrassed with their imaginative looks that they do everything they can to cancel meetings with friends or at work just so that they can stay at home and make sure that no one sees them as they think they look. The patient will think about their small problem at the very least an hour a day. The small defect can lead the patient to keep looking at themselves in the mirror and they can also start to excessively groom their hair and even start skin picking if they feel that their skin isn’t perfect. All this can lead to the patient feeling very sad and will have an impact on their internal self as they try to battle with this disorder. Symptoms The symptoms for potential body dysmorphic disorder sufferers are constantly checking into reflecting surfaces, excessive grooming, repeatedly touching the area where the imaginary defect is and even anxiety when they are with other people. The symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder can be very dangerous to the patient if they do not receive the correct help. If they are constantly ashamed of their looks then they will start to get extremely depressed with themselves and they can then lock themselves away from society and refuse to have a social life, they might even decide to drop out of school if they are still very upset with their appearance plus there are cases when the sufferer from this disorder has committed suicide because they could not take it any longer. Some people have begun to believe that this disorder is due to neglect caused by a parietal lobe that is located in the brain. Whatever the cause of body dysmorphic disorder you can be sure that the patient will usually end up feeling very depressed with themselves and they will want to lock themselves away from the rest of the world. Treatment There is treatment available for sufferers of body dysmorphic disorder. However they will usually be very reluctant to receive any help due to their imaginative defect. The main and possibly only treatment available is from a psychiatric doctor. The doctor can then help the patient to stop their constant looking into mirrors and they can try o help them see that there is no defect on their face. There are also support groups available for an individual that does suffer from body dysmorphic disorder. The main problem that people that live with these body dysmorphic disorder sufferers is that they cannot see the individuals face as the individual sees it. There is medication actually available for sufferers of this disorder which can somewhat suppress the thought that there is something wrong with their body but it will not eliminate the thoughts completely. Causes It is very hard to see or even understand what actually causes body dysmorphic disorder, there are a few theories that people use, which is what they believe causes this disorder but there is not a real cause for this disorder yet. The theories that some people use are connected with the brain. They feel that the patient that suffers from body dysmorphic disorder has a neglect in the parietal lube which is located in their brain. They feel that this is one of if not the main cause of body dysmorphic disorder. But the causes are still very unclear and this is just one of many possibilities for the causes of this disorder. Summary Body dysmorphic disorder is not a pleasant disorder for someone to go through, they will want to hide away from people such as friends and family plus they will keep checking their mirror to look at themselves. There are other sufferers of this disorder that try to avoid mirrors altogether because of their imaginative defect that only they can see on their face. If this disorder is not seen to by a psychiatrist then the patient may suffer severe depression and they may try to commit suicide due to the severe depression that they are suffering from. |
