Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Description

Oppositional defiant disorder is described as a person who has a hostile or defiant attitude towards authority figures. They seem to have their own law against authority figures and will not want to cooperate with these authority figures no matter what their request is. If this disorder is found in children then it is considered that it can cause serious functional impairment. Oppositional defiant disorder can be found in both children and adults. However even though your child may show some symptoms towards having this oppositional defiant disorder it is not considered a disorder until the behavior that your child shows is more persistent and also more intense. Also if they start to show more persistent dysfunctional attitudes in society. This disorder will show some severe attitude changes towards adults and authority figures for at least six months. Also people that have this disorder are also more likely to lose their temper more quickly, they will also deliberately do things just to annoy another person plus they can be spiteful and vindictive towards others not just adults.

Symptoms

Oppositional defiant disorder is known across the globe for being a disorder and therefore there are symptoms that can associate one person with having this disorder. Usually the patient will feel very angry towards other people that are older then them or if they have a higher authority figure then them they will feel much disrespect for that person. Suffers of Oppositional defiant disorder cannot resist arguing with adults they will also blame someone else if something does go wrong for them. If it is their own mistake then they are prone to blame others for the mistake. However these symptoms can occur in a normal teenage child especially as they are going through puberty. If these symptoms do persist for longer then 6 months then it is highly likely that the child will have Oppositional defiant disorder. This person should then be taken to the doctor who can then assess the situation and refer the patient to the correct psychiatrist if they feel that this is necessary.

Treatment

It can be a very tough time for you if your child is diagnosed with having Oppositional defiant disorder. But if you do get your child’s disorder diagnosed quickly then the doctor can offer your child or patient some treatment to help them recover from this disorder. The patient will more then likely be very reluctant to take anything or see anyone, but if you can convince them that they do need help then there are a few options that will be open to you and the patient. There is the option of psychotherapy which will involve the patient and either a group of people or just the doctor to go through the patient’s problem and see if they can correct the patient. There are self-help groups for the parents that are having trouble with their child who has this disorder. These self-help groups can be a lifesaver for many parents that are having a tough time with their child. They can talk about their troubles with other people that have experienced the same problem with their children.

Causes

It is not clear what actually causes the disorder Oppositional defiant disorder. But there are a few things to do with the patients past that might be a real cause of this disorder, for example negative interactions that the patient has experienced from their parents or even authority figures might be a real cause for the disorder appearing in their child. It has also been suggested that incomplete development could be a factor when your child starts to behave incorrectly for extended periods of time. Incomplete development means that their child never completed the development tasks that other children master when they are toddlers, they are thought of being stuck in the 2-3 year age bracket and they seem to never grow out of it.

Summary

Children who suffer with Oppositional defiant disorder are known to be more aggressive and also more impatient to authority figures and even adults. While research is still ongoing as to why these patients suffer from this disorder there are breakthroughs being made all the time and these breakthroughs can be extremely important over time. It seems that the only form of help available is through a psychiatrist.

Remind yourself of ONE thing: you are not your depression. This state of pain or panic is not an integral part of you, and it is not your fault. And it will go.
