Amantadine Hydrochloride: Information, Side Effects and Precaution

Amantadine Hydrochloride (HCL) is a medication that is used for reducing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It is also known as an anti-viral medication to treat sickness such as influenza. Additional uses for this drug exist as well, which can be explained to you by your doctor.

Amantadine HCL Dosage and Usage Information

The exact dosage of this medication that is prescribed by your doctor is the amount you should take. In addition, you are advised never to quite this medication without talking to your doctor about it.

Each dose of Amantadine should be taken with a full glass of water. Additional instructions are usually given to you by your doctor or pharmacist regarding this medication.

In Case of Overdose

You will need to contact a medical professional immediately in emergency situations. In the case of non-emergencies associated with overdose of Amantadine you can contact your local poison control center.

In Case of Missed Dose

If it is soon time for your next dose, you are advised to just skip the dose you missed and just take the next one. If it is awhile before your next scheduled dose, then take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

Amantadine Precautions

Those who do take Amantadine are advised to tell their doctor about any existing medical conditions. For instance, you will need to inform your doctor if you have seizures, kidney disease, or chronic rash. Not everyone will be able to safely take this medication, so it is necessary to be honest with your doctor.

You will also need to tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription drugs you are taking, as well as what dietary supplements you are taking (i.e. vitamins, diet pills, etc.).  In addition, you must inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because the effects on unborn children is unknown.

Amantadine Side Effects

All medications come with side effect medications so patients know what to expect. It does not mean that you will experience all of these side effects, or that you even will experience any of them.

Some of the less serious side effects of Amantadine are as follows:

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, or a headache
  • Dry mouth or constipation
  • Depression, anxiety, or confusion
  • Insomnia, nausea, or decreased appetite

More serious side but less common side effects of Amantadine include the following:

  • An allergic reaction such as hives; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; closing of the throat, or difficulty breathing
  • Confusion (upon discontinuation or dosage reduction)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Severe stiffness or involuntary movements of your arms or legs

You will want to inform your doctor immediately if you experience any serious complications upon taking this medication. Adjustments will be made as soon as possible.

Amantadine Storage and Disposal Information

Always make sure to keep your medication in the containers that it came in. In addition, you will want to make sure that they are sealed tight at all times, and that you keep this medication away from children. You can ask your doctor about any additional storage information.

If your doctor discontinues your use of this medication before you are finished using them all you are advised to properly dispose of any unneeded amount. You will also need to get rid of any Amantadine that is outdated as well.

Depression Quote
In moments of discouragement, defeat, or even despair, there are always certain things to cling to. Little things usually: remembered laughter, the face of a sleeping child, a tree in the wind—in fact, any reminder of something deeply felt or dearly loved. No man is so poor as not to have many of these small candles. When they are lighted, darkness goes away—and a touch of wonder remains. - 'These Small Candles' ...tombstone inscription in Britain
