Antabuse Medication Side Effects and Alcohol Recovery

Antabuse is a medication that is used for helping patients refrain from alcohol. Those who ingest alcohol while using this drug will experience varying reactions such as the following:

  • Throbbing headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Chest pain or racing heartbeat
  • Vomiting and sweating
  • Nausea, thirst
  • Low blood pressure

Antabuse is usually administered in a place such as an alcohol recovery clinic. It is often affective during the first few days of alcohol withdrawal, and could possibly be administered ongoing to certain patients.

Other Possible Antabuse Side Effects

Serious side effects associated with taking Antabuse could include the following:

  1. An allergic reaction
  2. Swelling of your lips, tongue, or face
  3. Shortness of breath, closing of your throat or hives
  4. Dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  5. Drastic appetite changes
  6. Extreme exhaustion
  7. Seizures
  8. Severe diarrhea or vomiting
  9. Weakness, dizziness or lack of coordination

Additional Antabuse Precautions

Users of Antabuse should also be aware that certain foods that contain some alcohol content could cause a reaction as well. For instance, many cold and cough medicines, mouthwashes, sauces, vinegars, and other common food products could cause an undesirable effect in a person.

Furthermore, you need to take this medication exactly how your doctor prescribes, in the dosage that your doctor prescribes. Along with that, you need to inform your doctor about any and all existing medical conditions. Some of those would include liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, diabetes, brain damage, epilepsy, mental disorders, and so on.

You will also need to inform your doctor if you plan on having a baby, or are breastfeeding. The effect of this medication on fetuses and newborns is highly unknown. You would not want to take a chance if you do not have to.

Antabuse Storage and Disposal Information

All medications including Antabuse should be stored properly, away from excess heat, light, and moisture. This medication should also not be left in the container it came in. That means that these medications should not be stored in the bathroom, under the sink, or any other place near heaters, or excess light.

If you no longer need Antabuse or the medication has expired you should contact your doctor or pharmacist and ask about how to properly dispose of this medication. It is important to not use medication that is outdated, because it will not be effective.
