Artane: Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

Artane is an antispasmodic drug. It works by producing what is described as an atropine-blocking action which helps reduce or eliminate muscle spasms. It also helps control muscle stiffness and other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This drug contains synthetic ingredients.

Side Effects of Artane

Less serious side effects associated with Artane include the following symptoms

  1. Blurred vision
  2. Dry mouth
  3. Nausea
  4. Nervousness
  5. Difficulty urinating

More serious side effects, but less common side effects of Artane include the following

  1. Allergic reaction such as closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, face; or hives
  2. Fever
  3. Fast or irregular heartbeat
  4. Anxiety, hallucinations, confusion, hyperactivity, etc.
  5. Seizures

Artane Dosage and Usage Information

You are advised to take the dose that your doctor prescribes for you. Usually the doctor will start you on a low dose, and gradually increase the amount of this medication to the amount appropriate for you.  The medication is most often used in people over 60 years of age.

In Case of Overdose

You will need to contact a medical professional in the case of an overdose emergency. In the case of an overdose non-emergency contact your local poison control center.

In Case of a Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible, or take the next dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one missed.

Precautions

If you plan to take Artake it is important that you are honest with your doctor about any and all medical conditions. Those with cardiac, liver, kidney, or hypertensive disorders are the ones that need to be the most closely monitored while on this medication.

If you are a patient who is taking Artane you will also need to inform your doctor about all medications that you are taking. This includes both prescription and non-prescription ones. In addition, those who are using Artane should be careful in hot weather, especially if these medications are combined with certain other drugs.
