Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride (HCL): Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride is a very low-potency anti psychotic drug also known by the brand names of Thorazine and Largactil.

It is most often used to treat disorganized and psychotic thoughts, and is also used to treat hallucinations and delusions. Chlorpromazine HCL is also used to treat psychotic symptoms in children, and is used to treat severe hiccups or protracted nausea.

Other uses of Chlorpromazine HCL include the treatment of mania, dementia, Tourette’s disorder, and involuntary movements (Those related to Huntington’s chorea).

Chlorpromazine works by changing a variety of chemicals in the brain that cause the mind to think and act in a way that is not typical.  You can ask your doctor or pharmacist for a complete listing of all the uses for this medication. Usually it is prescribed by a mental health professional or license medical doctor.

Side Effects

Most of the side effects from chlorpromazine are very uncommon, but they have a tendency to occur.

Some of the less sever side effects include the following:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness

Some of the more serious side effects of chlorpromazine include the following

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fine worm-like tongue movements
  • Jaw, neck, and back muscle spasms
  • Pacing
  • Rhythmic face, mouth, or jaw movements
  • Shuffling walk
  • Skin discoloration (yellowish-brown to grayish-purple)
  • Skin rash
  • Slow or difficult speech
  • Sensivity to Sunlight (Can be easily protected)

How to Take Chlorpromazine hydrochloride

This medication is only meant to be taken for as long of a time during which it is prescribed. This medication could become habit forming if a patient is not careful. Under no circumstances is it wise for you to take more than the recommended dosage for this drug.

This medication should be stored at room temperature and out of extreme heat, moisture, and light. If a dose is missed that missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. If a dose is missed and the next one is scheduled, you need to skip that missed dose, and just take the new dose as scheduled. A double dose of this medication should never be taken, and unneeded medication should be properly disposed of.

In Case of Overdose

Medical attention should be sought immediately in the case of an emergency. For non-emergency concerns regarding overdose a local poison center can be contacted.

Precautions for Taking Chlorpromazine

If you take Chlorpromazine, you will need to inform your doctor if you are allergic to this medication, or if you are allergic to any tranquilizer or any other drugs. You will also need to inform your doctor if you have ever reacted unfavorably to the use of insulin.

If you use Chlorpromazine you will also need to tell your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription drugs you take, including over-the counter drugs and vitamins. In addition, you will need to inform their doctor of any other existing medical condition, especially serious ones such as seizures, asthma, or bronchitis.

If you are pregnant or breast feeding you will also need to tell your doctor about that as well.  You will also need to inform your doctor about having any kind of surgery, including dental surgery.

In addition, alcohol can cause drowsiness in those who use this drug, and users should not drive or operate heavy machinery until they know the effects of this drug. Moreover, those who use this medication should be careful not to be exposed to the sun for very long and to always wear protective clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen.
