Desipramine (Norpramine): Tricyclic Depression Medication, Side Effects and Precautions

Desipramine is a tetracyclic medication used to treat depression. This medication is prescribed for other uses as well. It is also known by its brand name Norpramine.

Desipramine helps balance chemicals in the brain which help a person feel more emotionally balanced. Desipramine relieves symptoms of depression such as sadness, worthlessness, guilt, and loss of interest in daily activities. It also helps relieve insomnia and thoughts of suicide. It takes four weeks for patients to feel the full effects of this medication.

Desipramine Dosage and Usage Information

You will need to take the dose that your doctor prescribes, with or without food as your doctor recommends, with a full glass of water. You are advised not to stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor as well.

In Case of Overdose

In the case of an emergency that results from an overdose you will need to seek medical attention immediately. In the case of a non-emergency overdose situation you can seek information from a local poison control center.

In Case of Missed Dose

If you miss a dose you will need to either take it as soon as you remember or take the next regularly scheduled dose. Never under any circumstances should you take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Desipramine Side Effects

All medications come with a list of possible side effects. It does not mean that everyone will experience all of these nor does it mean that users will experience any of these. It mostly is a guide for users to know what to expect when taking this medication.

Some of the less serious side effects of this medication could include the following

  1. Drowsiness
  2. Dizziness
  3. Dry Mouth and Eyes
  4. Constipation
  5. Mild Tremor
  6. Sweating, weakness, or headache
  7. Ringing in the ears
  8. Nausea
  9. Loss of weight or appetite

Desipramine Precautions

Before you take desipramine make sure that you inform your doctor about any an all existing medical conditions including liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, or even any minor health conditions. In addition, you will need to inform your doctor about any over-the-counter medications, as well as prescription medications, that you are currently taking.
Furthermore, your doctor needs to know beforehand if you decide to take any other prescription or non-prescription drugs while you are on desipramine. You will also need to inform your doctor about the use of any herbal products as well.

You also will want to make sure that you tell your doctor if you are either pregnant or you are breastfeeding. In addition, you need to be careful while on this medication. That means you will need to use caution before deciding to drive, and know that you will be able to operate heavy machinery.

How to Store Desipramine

 This medication should be sealed tightly in the container that it came in. Furthermore, it should be kept out of the reach of children. In addition, you will need to keep it away from excess heat and moisture. All medication that is outdated or no longer needed should be thrown away.
