Antidepressant Lexapro: Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

Lexapro is one of the newest antidepressants used in the United States used to treat the symptoms of major depression. This medication was first approved by the FDA in the year 2002.

Lexapro contains certain medical components of Celexa, which also is the name of another type of antidepressant that has been used by over 30 million people. The result is finding out that Lexapro is able to treat both depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Lexapro usually starts to work within the first two weeks of treatment. In some cases it can take up to six weeks for patients to feel the full effect of this medication. Usually doctors who prescribe depression medication suggest you take it for at least a few months before you judge the effect it could have on you.

How Lexapro Works

Lexapro is an antidepressant which is a part of a class of drugs called serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It helps increase the level of serotonin, which is a chemical usually produced by the brain that has been recognized as one that influences mood.

Recommended Daily Dosage

It is important for you to see a doctor before you decide to take Lexapro. They can help you determine what exact dosage of this medication will work best for you. Usually patients will take between 20 to 60 mg a day. This medication can be taken with or without food, and is usually taken once a day.

Side effects of Lexapro

Usually all medications, including Lexapro, come with extensive information regarding side effects. Most of these experienced most often are minor.  However, if you experience any major trouble from this medication you will want to consult your doctor immediately.

The side affects that people experience the most while taking Lexapro often are the ones that are the least harmful to most people. The next three paragraphs give examples of some of the more common and rare side effects that appear while taking this medication.

Some of the common side effects of this medication include the following:

  • Headache, nervousness, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in appetite or weight, sleepiness, insomnia, decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm

Less common or rare side effects include on or more of the following:

  • Mania, seizures, suicide, and interference with cognitive functioning

Most of the above mentioned side effects as well as others not listed on this page do not happen very often. Likewise, side effects that are most common are also ones that are not fatal or seriously harmful. Most of the side effects are mild to moderate, and tend to discontinue after some time.

You also have to make sure that you get a complete physical and mental examination before choosing any medication. In addition, it is important that you always be honest with your doctor about how you are doing. Some medications do not work well for people who have certain existing medical conditions.

If you have any existing medical conditions of any kind you will want to make sure your doctor approves of you taking any medication, such as Lexapro. Most people will do fine taking this antidepressant, however.

What to Do if You Experience Side Effects

If you notice some unusual uncomfortable activity within your body while you take Lexapro, contact your doctor. Your doctor can carefully analyze the situation and help determine whether or not you should continue taking this medication.
Try not to be discouraged if you experience side effects. In most cases they go away in a few weeks.
