Maprotiline Antidepressant: Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

Maprotiline, an SSRI medication, is used to treat depressive illnesses such as depressive neuroses, manic-depression, and major depression. The effectiveness on this medication to combat symptoms of anxiety is currently being researched as well (has a sedative effect with anxiety related to depression).

Maprotiline Dosage and Usage Information

This medication is not recommended for children, and adults should take it exactly as the doctor directs. Prescriptions are given in the smallest amount as possible as the doctor considers appropriate for a person.

In addition, no one should use this medication except the person to whom it was prescribed, and for the reason it was prescribed. In addition, this medication should be continued unless your doctor directs you to be removed from it.

Maprotiline Side Effects

The most common and less serious side effects of Maprotiline include the following

  6. Suicide
  7. Seizures
  8. Prolonged and painful erections
  9. Liver damage, hepatitis
  10. Polyneuritis

If you experience any of these are any not listed you may want to report it to the doctor who is monitoring you, especially if you experience the more serious side effects.

Maprotiline Precautions

Patients who are prescribed Maprotiline will be monitored carefully during all phases of treatment-especially for signs of wanting to commit suicide. While patients are being monitored they need to be honest with the doctor about everything health-wise that is going on.

If you are taking or you plan to take Maprotiline you will need to inform your doctor about any and all medical conditions, including epilepsy, liver disease or glaucoma. In addition, you will need to tell your doctor about any and all medications (both prescription and non-prescription) you experience as well. Furthermore, this medication should not be taken while you are pregnant or lactating.

In addition, you should not operate heavy machinery while taking this medication or you should not drive until you know how this medication will affect you. In addition, you should use caution while operating machinery or performing other hazardous activities. In addition, alcohol should be used with caution.
