Mirtazapine: Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic medication used to treat depression. This medication is prescribed for other uses as well. It is also known as Remeron.

Mirtazapine works by two different processes that take place simultaneously. Basically this drug works against presynaptic alpha-2 by both increasing noradrenline, as well as the neurotransmission of serotonin.

Mirtazapine Dosage and Usage Information

You will need to take the dose that your doctor prescribes, with or without food as your doctor recommends. You are advised not to stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor as well.

In Case of Overdose

In the case of an emergency that results from an overdose you will need to seek medical attention immediately. In the case of a non-emergency overdose situation you can seek information from a local poison control center.

In Case of Missed Dose

If you miss a dose you will need to either take it as soon as you remember or take the next regularly scheduled dose. Never under any circumstances should you take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Mirtazapine Side Effects

All medications including antidepressants come with a list of side effects. That does not meat that users will experience all of the possible side effects, or even any.

Some of the less serious Mirtazapine side effects are indicated as follows

  1. Drowsiness, dizziness, or nausea
  2. Increase in weight and appetite
  3. Dry mouth
  4. Constipation or mild tremor

More serious side effects (however less common) associated with Mirtazapine include the following

  1. Thoughts or attempts of suicide
  2. An allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips, face, or tongue
  3.  Worsening Depression
  4. Difficulty breathing
  5. Seizures
  6. Fast or irregular heartbeat
  7. Fever, chills, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms
  8. Sores in your mouth or nose

You will need to inform your doctor especially if you experience any serious side effects from the above medication. Your doctor will then be able to make any necessary adjustments.

Mirtazapine Precautions

Before you take Mirtazapine your doctor will need to be aware of any and all existing medical conditions that you may have. In addition, you will need to inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking. This includes any prescription and non-prescription drugs-including vitamins, diet pills, and other supplements.

Furthermore, you will be closely monitored during the first few weeks of taking this medication to make sure your depression does not worsen. Also, if you are considering taking your life while starting this medication you will want to consult a doctor regarding this as well. In addition, you will need to hold off on operating any heavy machinery or driving until you know how this medication is going to affect you.

How to Store Mirtazapine

This medication should be sealed tightly in the container that it came in. Furthermore, it should be kept out of the reach of children. In addition, you will need to keep it away from excess heat and moisture. All medication that is outdated or no longer needed should be thrown away.
