Oxcarbazepine Seizure Medication: Drug Information, Side Effects and Precautions

This drug is used to help prevent seizures. It works by decreasing the impulses in the brain that lead to seizures. It is often used either along or with other seizure medications. You can contact your doctor regarding other uses for this medication as well.

Oxcarbazepine Dosage and Usage Information

Make sure you do not stop taking this medication suddenly. If you do it could cause a sudden seizure, and could happen any time any where. If your doctor decides you need to be removed from this medication or that you need to have the dosage lowered your doctor will help you get off of it gradually.

Additional precautions need to be taken as well, such as you may need to have your blood tested periodically, and the side effects that you experience will need to be monitored.

Oxcarbazepine Side Effects

All medications come with information about side effects. No two people will experience any medication in the same way. This applies to the use of oxcarbazepine as well.

Some of the less serious side effects associated with this medication include the following

  • Headache
  • Mild sleepiness or fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
  • Tremor
  • Rash, constipation, or decreased appetite
  • Weight gain or dry mouth

More serious side effects that occasionally are associated with the use of this medication include the following

  • Swelling lips, tongue, or face
  • Difficulty breathing, or closing of the throat
  • Hives
  • Low blood sodium
  • Nausea, general discomfort, headache, or extreme drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty concentrating or speaking
  • Excessive fatigue

If you experience any of the above side effects or any other make sure that you tell your doctor immediately. Some adjustments in dosage or medication will need to be made.

Oxcarbazepine Precautions

Before you take this medication you need to be aware that it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Furthermore, if you have taken it before and have been allergic to it you will not want to take it again, and you want to make sure your doctor knows of this situation.

You will also want to make sure if you tell your doctor about any existing medical condition such as kidney or liver disease. In addition, your doctor will need to know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are your doctor will need to make adjustments regarding it. Also this medication reduces the effectiveness of certain birth control pills. You will need to take a second method of protection while taking this medication.

Oxcarbazepine Storage and Disposal

Make sure you keep this medication out of excess heat and moisture, and make sure you take it before its expiration date.
