Thioridazine: Antipsychotic Medication, Side Effects and Precautions

Thioridazine is an antipsychotic medication that belongs to a group of medicines known as the phenothiazine antipsychotic. It is known also as a major tranquilizer. It treats symptoms of schizophrenia such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. It is also known by the brand names of Mellaril or Mellaril-S.

In Case of an Overdose

Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.

In Case of a Missed Dose

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Thioridazine Side Effects

Different people react to Thioridazine in different ways.

A list of the possible less serious side effects that could occur includes the following

  • Abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias)
  • Blood disorders
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty in passing urine (urinary retention)
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Fits (convulsions)
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Postural hypotension (A drop in blood pressure that occurs from lying down to sitting or standing)
  • Problems with sexual function
  • Visual disturbances

This medication in more rare situations could cause life-threatening problems such as the following

  • Fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting
  • Seizures

If you experience any of the more serious or life-threatening side effects call your doctor immediately. This medication is only intended for those that have not responded to other schizophrenia medications.

Thiorazine Precautions

Before you take Thiorazine you will need to talk to your doctor and inform him about any medications that you are taking. This means any and all prescription medications, including other anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medications. You will also need to inform your doctor if you are taking any prescription drugs as well.

Thiorazine Storage and Disposal Information

You will need to keep this medication stored securely in the container it came in.

Furthermore, you need to keep it away from excess heat and moisture. It is best to store it at room temperature. Any medication that you no longer need should be properly disposed of. If you need any help with the storage of your medication you can talk to your doctor or pharmacist about it.
