Men and Depression

"Dying is easy. Living takes a real man. Living well takes a hero."

Only the strongest of the strong can admit that they need help and have the courage and strength to get it.

Facts of depression in men

  • Every year, at least six million men in the United States suffer from a depressive disorder.
  • Both men and women experience depression differently and have different ways of coping with the symptoms.

Symptoms of depression in men

Rather than feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and excessive guilt; men may be more willing to acknowledge:

  • anhedonia (condition resulting in an inability to experience pleasure)
  • fatigue
  • irritability
  • loss of interest in work or hobbies
  • sleep disturbances
  • more alcohol and drug dependance
  • may easily get frustrated, discouraged, angry, irritable and, sometimes, violently abusive

A lot of men learn to dislike themselves because they are depressed. Men have trouble talking about emotional things.

Treatment of depression in men

Family members and friends play important roles in recognizing depressive symptoms in men and helping them get treatment.

Men should learn to accept that they are human beings too with strengths and weaknesses; and should accept themselves and others.

Various options for Treatment

  • Psychotherapy - It is a method of treating mental disorders that involves verbal and nonverbal communication about thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviors in individual, group or family sessions in order to change unhealthy patterns of coping, relieve emotional distress and encourage personality growth and improved interpersonal relations.
  • Antidepressants - These are the medication used to treat depression like Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, and Celexa. If one type of medication is not providing relief, a different type can be tried until you get a positive therapeutic effect.
  • In emergencies, or for some types of depression, ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) may be suggested.
  • Be POSITIVE in your thinking. The way you are thinking is being severely affected by your mood. Always remember, depression can always be successfully treated or certainly improved.
