Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)Human beings, born with dual potentials i.e. for both healthy and unhealthy thought processes. Core of REBT consists of A-B-C theory of personality where A is activating element, B represents a belief and C stands for causing the emotional consequence. REBT is the original form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Its founder is Albert Ellis who is a pshycologist. REBT emphasizes importance of cognition in psychological disturbances. Aim of REBT is to help patients recognize their irrational and destructive beliefs, feelings, and behaviors, and to restructure harmful philosophic and behavioral styles to achieve maximal levels of happiness and productivity. REBT is a kind of psychotherapy used to treat depression, anxiety disorders and phobias. REBT is based on simple principles having profound implications: 1. one is responsible for his own emotions and actions. REBT therapyAs told above the A-B-C theory of personality, it adds the
steps D, E and F. D represents desputing. In therapy the
counselor may point out faulty beliefs, but he or she
also teaches the client how to dispute them in
day-to-day life outside of therapy. The E here stands
for effective philosophy, F means here a new set of feelings
which are not debilitating. The therapist is not encouraged to
have a warm and caring relationship with the client. A successful collaboration between the REBT therapist and a client results in changes to the client cognitions, which results in better feeling of the client. The client moves toward self-acceptance despite his or her imperfections. |
